North laps up every minute of Sivaji

Mumbai / New Delhi: We know that it's a runaway hit in the South, but even though the Rajinikanth starrer Sivaji-The Boss is running without Hindi or English subtitles in North India, it has still managed a 98 per cent occupancy in the first week for the 39 shows that it ran in PVR cinemas.

The movie has grossed more than Rs 10 lakh up North - a trend that has strengthened into its second week.

In fact both, Mumbai and Delhi multiplexes are looking at increasing the number of Sivaji shows.

Says CEO Cine Media, PVR Ltd (Delhi), Gautam Datta, "There were about five shows running per auditorium and we had to double this to 10 in the nine cinemas that the movie was playing in."

While Rajinikanth enjoys a cult status down South, the North too seems to be lapping up every minute of Rajini. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter if Rajini is speaking in Tamil, many still want to watch Sivaji.

Interestingly the Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan starrer, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, which released the same Friday as Sivaji failed to make any impact at the box office.

So what makes Sivaji such a draw?

Says trade pundit, Amod Mehra, "We all know who Amitabh Bachchan is but we want to know who Rajinikanth is and why is he such a big star down South and why has he got such a world wide opening."

Sivaji-The Boss has managed to go beyond the Tamil speaking audience like never before and make its presence felt pan-India and beyond. All this with Rajini speaking simply Tamil!
