Tamil Nadu awaits new Rajni movie

SHOCK AND AWE: A delay in Shivaji's release is proving to be expensive for small budget movies.
SHOCK AND AWE: A delay in Shivaji's release is proving to be expensive for small budget movies.Chennai:

April 12, April 14 or May 8 - whatever be the date of release, no one wants to compete with the biggest names in the Tamil film industry.
Movies that waited for the World Cup and the exams to finish could now settle for a safer bet - to release their films well before or after Shivaji.
Director Pushkar has planned to released his movie Oram Po only much after Shivaji hits the theatres.
"The guys who are distributing Shivaji will get the best theatres, so for a small film to come in at this point of time, business-wise it becomes a little difficult to get good theatres or even good hoardings," says he.
Distributor's say that Shivaji's producers may go for 12 to 15 prints in A-grade theatres, literally leaving over a dozen others waiting to release their movies with not much choice but to release it before or after the release of the Rajnikanth starrer.
While the producers of Mayakannadi hope to release the film in mid-April to give it a fortnight's run before Shivaji releases, producers of other films such as Oram po and Solli Adippein have decided to play it safe releasing their films a little after Shivaji's hits the theatres.
And a Rajnikanth starrer would also mean that it's time for most movies released in the last two months such as Vijay's Pokkiri to shift to B-grade theatres.
Said to be made at a budget of Rs 60 crore, Shivaji would quite easily qualify as the most expensive film ever made in Tamil cinema, but a delay in its release is proving to be expensive for many other small budget movies.

Rajini as MGR, Sivaji & Chiru in Sivaji

As the D-day for Sivaji's release comes near, the fever is rising.

The latest news from the Sivaji camp is that the film will have some dance in which Rajini has some surprise.

Sivaji is to show up as Sivaji and MGR in a song sequence.

Rajini has mimicked many actors in a song in the film Thillu Mullu many years ago.

Now history is repeating itself.

Rajinikanth is a close friend of Chiranjeevi.

The two have a long association and they go back a long way to their formative years in Madras of the 70s.

Now Rajini who is acting in Shankar's Sivaji is paying compliment to his friend Chiranjeevi in the film.

Sivaji who is shooting for the final few scenes of the film has acted as NTR and Chiranjeevi, two legends of Telugu cinema, for a song. This is a small portion in the song.

This particular version has been specifically shot for the Telugu edition of Sivaji.

Rajini has made special efforts to look the part of his friend Chiranjeevi in Sivaji

`Sivaji' soundtrack, no longer a secret

Susan Muthalaly

CHENNAI: The soundtrack of Rajinikanth's `Sivaji' is no longer a closely guarded secret with three of the seven A.R. Rahman songs available on the Internet.

AVM Productions (the film's production company) manager K. Viswanathan said there were reportedly about 500 websites from where the songs could be downloaded.

The company has reported the leak to the cyber crime department and is awaiting action.

Due to this development, the movie's music may hit stores two days earlier than the original launch date of April 4.

But thanks to the talented Mr. ARR, AVM has actually recorded an increase in orders from dealers after the illegal release on the net, according to Mr. Viswanathan.

He said the response was overwhelming and that the current order figures stood at two lakh CDs and two lakh cassettes.

The songs that can be downloaded online are `Vaaji Vaaji', `Orukudai Sunlight' and `Sahaan Saaral'.

Promising film fare for Vishu

Shankar'sSivajitakes on a combined fight put up by five Malayalam films in this festival season. Mohanlal'sChota Mumbai, Mammootty'sBig B, Narein'sPanthayakozhi, Dileep'sVinodayatra, and Vinayan'sAthisayanare ready for release.

It is a fight between one big Tamil film and five Malayalam flicks at the box-office during the festival of Vishu. Rajnikanth's mega movie Sivaji is the talk of the town.
A few days before the release, the fans of the actor are busy working out innovative ways to welcome the first print.

They will copy Rajnikanth's style and visit the theatres where the movie will be screened. Industry reports suggest that the film was sold in record figures across the country.
In Kerala alone, the distribution rights of the movie were acquired at a reported rate of Rs.3 crore. So what makes Sivaji so special? Rajnikanth's much-awaited film after the runaway success of his last movie, Chandramukhi, is the undoubted reason for the pre-release hype.
His teaming up with ace director Shankar is the second reason. Shankar is famous for big budget movies like Gentleman.

Shankar's Sivaji takes on a combined fight put up by five Malayalam films in this festival season. Mohanlal's Chota Mumbai, Mammootty's Big B, Narein's Panthayakozhi, Dileep's Vinodayatra, and Vinayan's Athisayan are ready for release.
Chota Mumbai seems to be on the lines of director Anwar Rasheed's debut movie Rajamanikyam. Songs, fight sequences and a pacy narrative are the ingredients of the Mohanlal movie.

Mammootty plays Bilal in Amal Neerad's Big B. Tamil actor Pasupathi is a major highlight of the movie. Amal's debut film is an action-packed product.

Panthayakozhi has no big names but the cast include the promising Narein of Classmates fame. Director M.A. Venu (Chakoram, Kakakarumban) gets the support of actor Lal, who is making Panthayakozhi under the banner of Lal films.

Vinodayatra will test whether the Santhayan Anthikad- Dileep combine will make it big at the box-office. Meera Jasmine and Mukesh play major roles in the movie.
In Athisayan, director Vinayan experiments with modern graphics. Child actor Devadas is the highlight of the movie.

About Rs.10 crore will be at stake, as Malayalam film industry gets ready for the festival of Vishu.

Whats the response from AVM with regard to illegal Sivaji Audio?

With regard to the pirated Sivaji songs available at net, AVM Saravanan could not speak much about it. The way he responds to query reveals that the song may not be in the movie as what we heard in the net. It might be a track song with some background and chorus missing from the original song.

AVM Saravanan has no plan to release the songs earlier and it will be done as per what they have planned earlier (4 April 2007). There is gossip that Telugu audio will be released on 26 March 2007 and Rajini might attend if the function is held there! This will affect Tamil Rajini fans as Rajini doesn't give priority to Tamil fans. This is what he did for Baba audio release.

There is high chance that the movie will be released at the end of April or early May 2007 as the background music yet to pinned for the movie!

15 days of songs, dance and Rajini

While talking to Behindwoods correspondent about the climax song of Sivaji, its choreographer Raghava Lawrence vouches that it will be the talk of the town for some time to come. The song sequence has been reportedly shot for fifteen days. He says that this climax song will certainly be the highlight of the film.
Rajini
As per this talented dance master, director Shankar had given him the complete freedom regarding the dance steps for this last song in the film.

"Superstar has showcased his stylish movements in this number and being a natural dancer that he is, has performed in a remarkable fashion", Lawrence reports. He also recalls with amusement an interesting anecdote in connection with this scene. During the shooting of the climax song, Lawrence flummoxed by Rajni's charisma, had whistled loudly forgetting himself. He had to be brought back to reality by director Shankar's call. When a seasoned choreographer like Lawrence himself was stumped by super star's dance movements, need we say about others...?

Sivaji album's beta release - ARR finally gets it right, courtesy Shankar

Regular readers of this blog know how big a fan of Thalaivar I am and in fact, the name of this blog was named after the real boss, Sivaji. I was feeling bad that I wasn't writing anything about the movie after naming the blog after it. But the real culprit was Shankar and not myself. Until now, the release date of the movie has not been officially announced and all we know as of now is the audio release date of April 4th.

But today morning, I start browsing and come across the news that AVM has released some promo CDs with 3 songs to a select group of people and some folks from among them have taken the burden to upload the songs to a site from where we could download them. The tension in the air was almost unbearable as I was downloading the songs. After almost 15 months of waiting, these 3 songs were the first feel of how The Boss has shaped out. Shankar had successfully quarantined us from any news about the movie for these 15 months and I have been hating him for that. But all those thoughts vanished as I started listening to the songs. Though it is not a moral thing to download stuff from the net, I went ahead & did it bcos I know for sure that I will buy the audio CD of the movie whenever it comes out. So, no feelings of guilt in this.

First thing to note is that I am not going to review the songs. Being the Thalaivar fanatic that I am, I can not 'review' the songs. Rather, I will go about appreciating the highlights of the songs and that is what this post is. I mean, when it comes to anything associated with Thalaivar, rational thinking and reasoning just disappear. You get so much involved in it that its is difficult for me to pass a measured judgment.

Before I start writing my thoughts on those 3 songs, I have to mention that IMHO there has not been a better album for a Thalaivar album since Annamalai got released around 15 years ago. And ARR frankly has been a major disappointment in that regard with his first 3 albums for Thalaivar - Muthu, Padaiyappa and Baba. Except for the awesome intro music for the Oruvan oruvan mudhalaali song, ARR has nothing to show for. To bring in a cricket analogy, scoring music for a Thalaivar movie is to be able to be playing a Sehwag innings. Though his technique is suspect, not all of his shots are just wild slogs. Basically, his innings is a good mixture of textbook cricket shots and some wild slogs too. Same is the case when it comes to scoring for Thalaivar's movies and frankly nobody has it done better ever since Deva gave us Annamalai. Vandhendaa paalkaaran is still my favorite Thalaivar intro song (may be the way it was picturized too had something to do with). There are 2 melodies in Annamalai - Annamalai annamalai, Rekkai katti parakkudhaiyya annamalai cycle and I still love listening to them. Then comes the Thalaivar thathuva songs in Vettri nichayam and Oru penn puraa. And the album signs off with the song for the masses - Kondaiyil thaazhampoo. What an album it was...

But the problem with ARR is that he is someone like Dravid who only knows to play classic shots and so when ARR tries his hand at composing a Thalaivar-style mass song, he completely messes it up (say, the En peru padaiyappa song or the more notorious Baba…cinema cinema song). He is basically caught in the middle of nowhere when it comes to scoring music for Thalaivar songs. But that definitely appears to have been changed with Sivaji. And I feel that the man behind that change is none other than Shankar. He is clearly the one who is calling all the shots and all these 3 songs have Shankar written all over them. But to me the hero of the album so far has been Vairamuthu. He has come up with some awesome lyrics in all the 3 songs.

Oru koodai sunlight - Typical Shankar song though. This is the song that was shot in Spain with Thalaivar in all those funny costumes and get-ups. Highly techno song. Only sore point is the presence of the beats which we have become familiar with the karu karu vizhiligalaal song from PMC. There is no tune as such in this song. There is someone smiling at couple of places in the song. Wonder if its Thalaivar. No matter who actually smiled, I am already looking forward to Thalaivar flashing his magnetic smile on-screen. The lyrics in the song sing Thalaivar praises all through. So, here is how it goes:

ada ada ada asathudhu un style
nada nada nada nadapadhu un style
gada gada gada siripadhu un style
pada pada pada pesuvadhu un style
suda suda suda thoduvadhu un style
thada thada thada adhiradi un style
adikadi mudi kalaivadhu style
vara vara ellamay style....

I loved the way the stanza ended - vara vara ellaamey un style. Awesome. Thalaivar is the epitome of style. Everything the man does is style and what better way to put it than this way. And then the songs ends with these 2 lines:

hero hero heraadhi hero
staro staro nee superstaro

Whenever the mention of Superstar is made in the lyrics, I just get so excited and it is no different here.

Sahana saaral thoovudho - I don't get this. Looks like neither does ARR. What in the world makes him use Udit Narayanan for Thalaivar. We already have a bad experience in Muthu. I can't understand how Shankar let this happen. There is this 60 year old man called SPB who could have done a great job with this song. But the good thing is that we do not have too much of Udit sodhappalgal in this song. Awesome melody. Better than the Vaaji vaaji song. This truly is a vintage ARR melody. Easily the best melody that ARR has composed for Thalaivar. ARR pitches in the interludes for the theem thana thana na bit. I loved the female voice in this song. Don't know who it is. Would have enjoyed and appreciated this more if somebody else had sung this instead of Udit.

Vaaji vaaji Sivaaji - One of those rare ARR songs that is instantly likable. I wouldn't go as far as saying that this is a trademark ARR melody since the freshness is definitely missing. Charanams are rather average. But the plus side of this song is that ARR has got the Thalaivar factor right. This song will go down well with Thalaivar fans. Hariharan is perfect for this song. The aambal aambal...mouval mouval chorus is catchy. I am sure there will be a big research launched by Thalaivar fans as to what the words aambal and mouval mean :)

No matter how the songs are, we, the mighty army of Thalaivar fans, will lap it up and make the sure that the audio becomes the biggest hit in the history of Tamil cinema. I am sure that is going to happen with this album too. I have already listened to the songs almost 15 times. One thing is for sure though - the songs are sound so much better than the songs in Chandramukhi. There are reportedly 6 songs in the album and thus the SPB song and the song which Thalaivar has sung are still pending. Just can not wait for them to be released.

The Boss has started his reign ,starting with our ears, in style...

"Authentic" Media "Report

Hi Friends,

I am seeing lot of discussions on the Sivaji release date / cassette release date etc. After all film making is a 'Project'. Like any other projects, this also has all kinds of risks / dependencies / schedules etc.

How many of you work in IT projects and how many revisions the project plan goes thru during its life cycle. Is that any individual to be blamed for the revision?. Can we get mad at Project Manager alone for any delays?. Yes he holds the responsibility for delivery but he can not be personally blamed for any delay which is not his control alone.

I  do not know about Shankar's credibility as a project manager but I am convinced he is definitely comparable to one of the veterans of Project Management profession. I will not be surprised if he uses all modern project management tools. If not atleast use the basic tool like Microsoft Projects. Days have gone where film director be just creator. TO my knowledge Maniratnam changed the film making style of Directors. As Management Professional he introduced management tools to the industry of film making. Shankar has gone more steps ahead of him.

Now, the point is, don't get upset because no information about the cassette release date, movie release date and official information. After all the movie is taken for US only. Like a mother knows when and what to feed a child, Shankar knows when to release to us. I consider your emotions like crying babies. I just want to tell you like a father telling crying baby ' amma  seekiram sappadu panniduvada, konjam poruthukka'.

Come on friends, have some more patience... dont get too emotional..

One of the big-budgeted movies in the Tamil film industry, Sivaji has been making news since the day the project was announced, for it brings together big names like Rajinikanth, Shankar, AVM and AR Rahman.

Tentatively planned for a release this Tamil New Year's day, the excitement and hype now surrounds the audio of Sivaji.

Sources close to AVM say that the audio launch would be a low-key affair. AR Rahman joins hands with Rajini after Baba.

Fans of Rajinikanth are eagerly waiting for the day, to go and grab the audio cassettes.

Sivaji -Creates History ! Overseas Right Sold -US 3 Million !

The overseas rights of the Rajnikant-Shankar film has been sold, by
AVM to London based `Ayngaran International' for an all time record
price- A Sify Scoop!

Even before release, Rajnikanth's Sivaji is creating new records in
distribution rights sale. It created a benchmark in distribution
sales in India- Andhra, Kerala, and Karnataka and now the most
wanted area- Overseas (rest of the world barring Indian domestic
market). It has been grabbed by the London based K.Karunamoorthy of
`Ayngaran International` after a stiff bidding war with some of the
big names in Bollywood overseas distribution trade.

The market buzz is that Ayngaran, who controls 90 percent of the
lucrative Tamil film overseas business, has swung the deal in their
favour for a whopping US $ 3 million, approximately Rs 13 Crore. It
is the highest ever paid for a Tamil or any film in South Indian
language!

Please note that Hindi films are almost three times as big as Tamil
films abroad. Recently UTV purchased Shahrukh Khan's virtually the
emperor of overseas market Don, for $ 3 million. Now Sivaji a Tamil
film at the same price has created a big stir in the overseas market.

Remember Chandramukhi, the previous film of the superstar was sold
overseas for $ 1.4 million or approximately Rs 6 Crore. But the buzz
around Sivaji, where Rajnikanth is being directed by Shankar who has
an impeccable track record abroad pushed the price to an all time
new high. The overseas rights include theatrical, audio, video, DVD,
internet and inflight.

Overseas market analysts feel that it is a stiff price, and much
will depend on the opening that the film takes and the marketing of
Ayngaran. Normally a big Tamil film releases with 70 to 85 prints.
Sivaji will have to open with 120 to 130 prints, if it has to break
even.

Sivaji mp3 and video in internet ???

It is no surprise that Sivaji is the most awaited movie in Kollywood. The audio of the movie has also generated lots of excitement among fans. Again no surprise when it involves A.R.Rahman, Shankar and Rajinikanth. It was for "Boys" that A.R.Rahman and Shankar last came together and the audio sales skyrocketed fighting all odds in the form of piracy.
Sivaji
Readers might remember that Boys audio hit the piracy market well before the official audio release and its MP3 audio files were available in the internet.
Sivaji
Now there are fears that same could happen with Sivaji audio. Already there are certain audio files claiming to be Sivaji songs making rounds in the internet. There are forums and e-mails boasting of having a copy of the Sivaji songs. It appears that some one has recorded the songs during the shoots of the songs. Knowing how Shankar keeps everything tight and secured, it is hard to believe this audio could be of Sivaji's. But to make matter worse there are also video files of the shoot of the songs that is going rounds in the internet.

Meanwhile the original audio of the movie is expected to hit the stands by this month.
Sources confirm that there is a huge demand on Sivaji audio and is expected to sell over within a few days of its entry to the stores. "Sivaji audio has generated a great interest among the youth. We get enquires on Sivaji every day. There are also request for advance bookings" said Music World manager. "We have not had so many enquiries recently for any movie like we had for Sivaji" he added. Sivaji is definitely a salesman's treat. Let us all wait for the original copy of the audio and say a big "No" to piracy.

AR Rahman sang a duet song in Sivaji

"After `Vande Mataram' [his album] I stopped singing duets ... only spiritual and patriotic songs I decided. But again perceptions change, so I've sung `Tere Bina' [`Guru'] and a duet for `Sivaji' [Rajinikant's next]." You mention the range that was made discernibly tough for Hariharan in the `Vennilavae' song (`Minsara Kananvu'), and he smilingly nods. "When a tune gets approved such things happen. But it doesn't show in the cassette as it does when he sings live." Rahman's penchant for jazz chords comes out now and then. `Hey Goodbye Nanba' (`Aaidha Ezhuthu' â€" `Yuva' in Hindi) is an example. "True. I love jazz. But very few understand it. So whenever it's suitable I use the progression," he says. Hindustani is another choice genre. "I like listening to Kishore Amonkar, Hasu Patel and others. And the melodies of the 1960s fascinate me. At the same time the youngster in me digs rock and jazz," he laughs. M.S.Viswanathan is an all time favourite of Rahman. "A real master," he commends.

`Sivaji` resale in Kerala!

AVM's Rajnikanth mega budget Sivaji,'s resale has taken place in Kerala territory. Remember that Sify.com had broken the news of the first official Sivaji theatrical rights sale in Kerala to Palakkad Govindan's G.R.S films, a few weeks backs for Rs 3.10 Crores.
Now G.R.S has sold the entire Kerala theatrical rights except Palakkad district to Johnny Sagariga Films for an undisclosed amount. The grapevine has it that Govindan gets to keep Palakkad district worth Rs 20 to 25 Lakhs as his profit, even before the film has released!

Johnny Sagariga was one time a leading audio company before it ventured into producing films. Most of Johnny's films bombed, though he had a big hit in Niram, which was subsequently remade in Tamil. For the last few months, Johnny was keeping a low profile, after he switched over to Tamil film distribution with Sillunu Oru Kathal, which almost wiped him off!

But now Johnny has made a fantastic comeback by buying the Sivaji rights. The trade in Kerala is skeptical and says it is too high a price to pay and that too without Palakkad. Still Johnny is a willing risk taker, as the hype on the film gets bigger day-by-day.
Johnny is an optimist and feels that it will work out for him, as he plans to release the film in 60 to 70 screens in Kerala. It is an experiment which has not been tried out for any Tamil or Malayalam film before in the state.

For example in the two major centers, Tiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam he is releasing the film in three theatres. And in smaller stations like Attingal or Tirur there will be two screens.

Lights, camera, attraction

What was that big balloon that lit up the city's sky recently? S. R. ASHOK KUMAR on the making of the latest Rajni starrer, "Sivaji: The Boss"

STYLE KING From "Sivaji: The Boss"
The orange orb of the sun sinks into the horizon. As darkness descends, the sky around the ICF Grounds in the city suddenly lights up. A golden glow emanates from a huge air balloon. Passers-by are astounded by the size of the balloon and its blaze, but can't really get a peek at the happenings inside the grounds. Not even journos.

As it is usually with Shanker, Kollywood's director with a Midas touch, the making of his latest film, "Sivaji: The Boss," is also a closely guarded secret. According to industry sources, the inflated balloon lighting system has been brought from France, especially for the shooting of the Rajni-starrer. The balloon is said to have come from Airstar Space Lighting, the company that illuminates major international showbiz dos such as the Cannes Film Festival.

Kollywood's first
These balloons that can be hoisted up in the air are said to be a powerful lighting source for large areas. They were used during the making of "Titanic." In India, the first film that used Airstar's innovation was "Rang De Basanti." "Sivaji" is Kollywood's first. The inflated balloons can light up areas up to four hectares. The light is glare free and homogenous. Besides, one can look directly at it without being dazzled by its intensity, say unit sources. These balloons that allow a seamless progress of work from day to night, have been brought to the city by Harish Samtani of Stereo Vision.

A fight sequence and a song, featuring Rajni, are said to have been canned post-twilight, using light from these shadow-free billowing systems.

Well, for those who came in late, these flutter-causing balloons are just one of the highlights of "Sivaji." It is Rajni's first film with director Shanker. The number `nine' too makes news with "Sivaji." While it's the superstar's ninth film for AVM Productions (the first was "Murattukkalai" in 1980 followed by a string of hits), "Sivaji" is Shanker's ninth film ever since he made his debut with "Gentleman" in 1993. (This film is produced by Saravanan and his son M. S. Guhan.)

And what else? "Mazhai" fame Shreya co-stars with Rajni for the first time, while Nayantara, who was the superstar's love interest in the record-breaking hit "Chandramukhi," features in a special dance number shot in Pune. Actor Suman plays the menacing villain in the film, whose crew have zipped across continents for the shooting â€" from Ramoji Rao Film City in Hyderabad and Binny Mills and AVM Studios in Chennai to picturesque locales in Spain and the U.S.

With music wiz A. R. Rahman's score, National award-winning K. V. Anand's velvety visuals, Sujatha's punch lines, Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram and Raghava Lawrence's choreography, Shanker's style and Rajni's `ishtyle,' "Sivaji" looks set to become the real boss at the box office.

A Rajinifans' Roadmap for Sivaji's release

    Friends,

Now that Sivaji is into its post-production stage and is slated for
    a 12th April, 2007, release, I, as a Rajini-fan, is taking stock of
the present situation to look at when & how Sivaji can be released
by taking into consideration the stakes and the people involved and
the need to end the unending wait for the fans' desire to see their
Thalaivar on screen under Shankar's magic.

    A. Stakes & people involved:

    1. THE Super Star of Indian Cinema featuring in a dream project
with the ultimate entertaining director Shankar's magnum opus
produced as a "life-time ambition" project by the long-serving AVM
    Productions.
    2. Huge expectations from the fans and public alike because of the
mega team of Rajini-Shankar-ARR-AVM. Already hyped as a "going to
be a record-breaking movie" by the media with so many stories of the
    movie floating around.
    3. The costliest movie ever produced in Tamil rumoured to have cost
around Rs. 40 crores without including the remuneration of Super
    Star & Shankar.
    4. Expected or rumoured to be sold for the highest amount in each
territory not only in TN but also neighbouring states; apart from
this, expected to rake in huge amounts from overseas distribution,
song/music ringtones, trailer, audio, VCD/DVD, satellite and dubbing
    rights too.
    5. With this kind of business, it is expected to make huge box-
office collections in order to justify the investment of hundreds of
crores of money into this project.

    B. Current Ground Situation:

Sivaji is slated to be released on 12th April, 2007, as per a
newspaper report quoting Mr. AVM Saravanan himself. All the post-
production works are being done in order to release the movie by
    that date.

As explained in my previous post on the "increased Threat
Perceptions" for Sivaji, Cauvery verdict, World cup fever & ticket
price conundrum are seriously hampering the chances of Sivaji, if it
is released on Tamil New Year's Day in April, 2007.

So, is there any work-around solution available? According to me,
the answer is yes & I have explained "how" hereinbelow.

    C. Postpone Sivaji's Release

Yes Friends. As an ardent Rajini fan like you all, it is difficult
for me but if one thinks through these present situations which is
slowly but surely getting more complicated due to cauvery issue,
postponing the release is the best way to avoid any hiccups the film
    may face in theatres.

Recently, a Tamil newspaper has reported a news which said that the
Sivaji Team is thinking on similar lines - that is postponing the
release of Sivaji from April to a later date.

    D. When to release Sivaji?

I feel May 17th could be a viable option.

For one, it is also a Thursday (like April 12th) as well as a longer
    (4-day) week-end.

Secondly, it gels well with Shankar's "Lucky Number 8" syndrome.

Thirdly, World Cup would have ended by April end & there is no
chance of clashing with the live telecast. Hence, even if Sivaji is
released in 15 Theatres in Chennai alone, with daily 4 shows in each
theatre, with an average seating capacity of about 800 people per
show per theatre, it will be easy to draw a crowd of 12,000 people
daily for 4 shows in all these 15 theatres day after day for 15 days
and more. There won't be any chance of a reduction in crowds due to
wrold cup live telecast during evening & night shows & hence by May
end Sivaji would have started making profits. The same holds true
for any other city or town also so that all the territories can
witness the real potential of Sivaji & reap in reward collections.

Fourthly, May is still the summer holiday season & the holiday crowd
which was expected to flock the theatres in April will continue to
flock even in May and thus there is no need for anxiety on that
    count.

Finally & importantly, 17th May comes well after the deadline for
filing revision petition in the Cauvery Tribunal. The judgment of
the tribunal was delivered on 5th Feb.,'07 & there is a 90 days time
frame for the parties concerned to appeal against the verdict or
file appeals for revision etc & that date expires on 6th May, 2007,
by which time they would have had to decide one way or other & file
    their appeal petitions.

So, by that time the case would have again become sub-judice & hence
people can't openly be protesting against the verdict after 6th May,
2007. So, the chances of any rioting or arson, which was witnessed
during Baba release will fade away as also the pressure on Thalaiavr
to come out openly in favour of one state or other will not be there.

Sivaji can also be released peacefully in Karnataka since, hopefully
by that time, Tamil films would have been allowed to be released in
Karnataka. Even yesterday in Bangalore, some local activists have
protested & removed banners in Bangalore's Nataraj theatre to
protest against the release of a Tamil movie. Because Bangalore &
Karnataka are big markets for a Tamil movie (bigger than Kerala), it
is not wise to ignore such a huge market where Thalaivar's movies
    always run well.

    E. Raodmap for Sivaji's Release:

Here is my suggestion of a roadmap for the stage by stage release of
Sivaji related activities so that the fans' interest are kept in
tact & they are not disappointed because of the bitter dosage of the
    postponement news.

    1. Audio Release - On or before 20th March, 2007
    2. Ringtone Release - End-March or Early-April, 2007
    3. Movie Trailer Release in Theatres - 14th April, 2007 (Tamil New
    Year)
    4. Movie Trailer Release in TV/Other Media - Last week of April,
    2007
    5. Shankar/AVM/Thalaivar Interviews in TV/Media - First Fortnight
    of May, 2007.

    F. Advantages in postponement:

    1. Avoid Troubles - All potentital troubles are out of the way
    2. Shankar can be Perfect - Its a blessing in disguise for the Ever-
Perfectionist Shankar who can keep on fine tuning the movie to his
utmost satisfaction without any deadline pressure
    3. Super Build-up - Slowly but surely, starting from Sivaji audio,
fans' appetite is satisfied & at the same time a superb build-up to
    the finale is made

In conclusion, in order to protect a hugely invested project & to
ensure its financial viability for all its stakeholders, postponing
a project, which has taken 20 months from concept to reality, by one
more month, is not at all harmful, particularly if it is going to
ensure its success, which is what originally envisaged.

    With Luv,

    Arun

'Sivaji' is not for sale - AVM's decision

Buying a Rajini film is like laying hand on a gold mine and the same can be said of Rajini's film 'Sivaji' too.

After many years, AVM is producing 'Sivaji' with Rajini in the lead. Naturally rumours abound about various elements of the film.

Though the production unit safeguards every aspect of the film, some gossip or other about the film makes its way into the press every day. Now that work has started on the post production, some news or other about 'Sivaji' release makes the rounds in Kodambakkam.

One rumour has it that Sun TV has offered 100 crores for 'Sivaji' release rights and a cell phone company has topped that offer.

Another source has it that AVM originally wanted to sell the rights to an outside company but not getting the expected price, AVM Saravanan has decided to release the film himself.

Whatever be the case, it is expected that 'Sivaji' will earn a minimum of 100 crores!

Sivaji - strategy for trailer release

    All said and done, as a preview to the impending visual treat, Sivaji's trailer is all set to hit the screens. This time around, the bigwigs seem to have restricted the trailer's release to only theatres initially. Sources revealed that based on the response the trailers receive at the movie halls;
    rajini
it will gradually be unfolded to other media such as television and Internet. The idea is to monitor whether cinegoers are flocking the theatres, just to see the trailer of Sivaji and if so which are the theatres that are witnessing an increase in the number of people catching up with the trailer. The release of the movie is expected to be strategically done based on these specific theatres.

This means the trailers will hit the television screens right after a week it was released in cinema halls. Shankar recently wrapped up the shoots of Sivaji after which dubbing activities have been carried out as well. Sivaji has already raised the bar among fans since it is Rajinikanth's release after Chandramukhi, which hit the screens in 2005.

    Shankar's stoic silence!

There are 40 days left for the release of Rajnikanth's AVM big budget extravaganza Sivaji. However director Shankar has not uttered a word about the release date or anything regarding the film! No press material or even the audio launch of the film has taken place!

Shankar believes in the old saying – "Silence is golden". According to sources close to Shankar, he will speak only when the film is ready for release. The buzz is that graphics and special effects are still to be completed, and re-recording is yet to start. A.R Rahman takes a long time in re-recording, and Shankar too is known to spend days on a single reel! Added to that there are rumours that Shankar and Rahman would prefer doing the work in London, where they will not be disturbed or be under any kind of pressure.

Remember Shankar's earlier producer Oscar Ravichandran, kept on announcing the release date of Anniyan, which he had to keep on postponing, as the director was not ready with the final copy! Finally when Shankar was ready, he himself told Ravi to release it on a particular Friday (June 17, 2005). Shankar kept to his lucky number 8 (1+7) and the rest as they say is history, as the film turned out to be a blockbuster!

No wonder they call Shankar the Big- P. The perfectionist who provides paisa-vasool movies to the public, but is a pain for the producer! His style of working has been like that from his Gentlemandays and all big banners had to grin and bear it.

Shankar is perhaps the most successful commercial film director in India. He has an awesome strike rate of nearly 100 percent at the box-office; all his films have made money for its producers. In a career spanning 14 years he has directed only 7 films in Tamil which literally means a film every two years. It clearly shows the man's sincerity, passion and dedication to his work.

For Shankar,Sivajiis special, as it was his dream to do a film with Rajnikanth. A few years back he had written the Muthalvan script keeping the superstar in mind. As a creator he visualizes each and every scene and is particular that what he has in mind be put on celluloid. It is a tight rope walk as Sivaji is concerned, as it is a tough job to balance what his script demands and the superstar's screen image plus the huge expectations from his fans. Actually Shankar has completed the entire shoot of the talkie portion and five songs of the film in 13 months, which is very fast by his standards.

After all, at the end of the day it is a Shankar film, and there is a method in his making of the mega budget movie. The onus is on him to make it a blockbuster, and it is not fair to hurry him up. After waiting patiently all these months, a few more weeks to watch Sivaji does not make much difference!

Questions! Questions! Where are the answers?

    Friends,

Of late, the information flow(?) on "Sivaji" has become a trickle &
I am afraid even this trickle looks like stopping altogether with no
official news or media-generated reliable gossip coming our way.

Since the news on AVM. Saravanan's interview to Daily Thanthi reg
the completion of shooting & even dubbing of Thalaiavr's portion as
well as the release date being fixed for 12th April, 2007, and the
likely release of Sivaji's audio not later than the second week of
March, 2007, we have not heard anything of substance reg the movie
    or its other related matters.

Why is it that still there is no official announcement reg Sivaji
    audio release date/function?
Or will there be any audio release function held at all?
Are there 5 or 6 songs in the movie? (Hindu report says 5)
When are they going to release the trailer in TVs?
When are they going to activate the official website of the
    movie "sivajitheboss.com"?
Has Sivaji been sold out, including overseas territories? If not,
why is it still dragging on?
Is the editing portion completed & re-recording started? If not,
when will it be over & re-recording will start?
Will it be ready in time to get censored, so many prints taken out &
safely sent to the destinations in time for a 12th April release?

I have so many & more questions going thru my mind but am not able
to get any definitive answers. This is really putting me off &
though the time between now & April 12 is just about 5 weeks, it
looks like a huuuuuu...ge wait. I was able to wait since August,
2005, patiently but since the announcement about 12th April being
the release date, I have become restless & simply could not wait.

Nowadays, its become like I need to hear something or the other
about Sivaji daily, without which it is very difficult to pass a
day. I am sure many of you are also going thru this agony of
waiting endlessly for Sivaji like me.

AVM Saravanan Sir, Shankar Sir, Please hear so many fans' plight of
endless waiting to see our "Sivaji - The Boss" on the silver
screen. Request you at least from now on keep giving some news or
other to the media to help keep our expectations in check & quickly
release the audio without any more delay (with or without
function). The audio will keep us engaged till 12th April, 2007, by
which time, hopefully the movie itself will be released.

I request Moderators & other seniors like Ramki, Sundar, etc. to use
their contacts & good offices to gather more information & keep them
posted regularly in our forum so that many fans will keep abreast of
the latest developments on Sivaji front.

Thanks for reading & sharing my agony.

    With Luv,

    Arun

    Sivaji over priced?

With Sivaji – the big daddy of Tamil films this year – heading for a mid-summer-2007 release, distribution rights of the movie are being discussed upon in full tilt. Vying for the rights of the movie among others, that is promisingly money-spinning, are topnotch media giants and corporates.
    Sivaji
However, AVM seem to be contemplating profoundly on Sivaji's business in Tamil Nadu now it has already been sold in Andhra and Kerala.

Sivaji has managed to fetch an astronomical 14 crores in Telugu. Distribution rights in Andhra Pradesh have been bagged by producer Bellamkonda Suresh. Whereas in Kerala, the movie was sold for 3.5 crores, yet unheard for another movie in god's own country.

Since ticket rates of Andhra and Kerala underwent no changes, as opposed to Tamil Nadu, Sivaji is expected to generate fecund box office collections. Besides, with big names such as Rajini and Shankar associated with Sivaji, the distributors in those states face relatively low risk factor.
    Sivaji
    Business in home turf

Apparently, Sivaji's business in neighboring states has churned out huge expectations in Tamil Nadu as well. If we consider Sivaji's selling price in Andhra and Kerala, the movie is expected to fetch atleast 50 crores in Tamil Nadu, revealed a leading distributor from NSC area to Behindwoods correspondent. However, trade pundits are unsure of the profits the movie would spawn if it was sold at 50 crores.

Based on the collections of the recent blockbuster movies, it could be adjudged that the slash in ticket rates has had a huge impact on the profit. The collections dropped by just half after that, stated another trade source to our correspondent.
On the other hand, if the 50 crore package included overseas, audio, and satellite rights, Sivaji would prove to be a buyer's delight. Rumors hover around the Sivaji stable substantiate the same.
    Case Study

Earlier, blockbuster Vettaiyadu Vilayadu has been released in 11 theatres in Chennai. Sivaji is expected to be released in atleast 15 theatres however. Since the initial collections in two weeks will decide the profit ratio of the movie, it is expected that Sivaji will be released in a maximum number of theatres to cash in on the success mantra and to reap benefits.

By all means, the hottest business deal in Kodambakkam ever is around the corner and is creating ripples among the trade circles every now and then.

    Sivaji
Not for long though. Given the fact that the movie will hit the screens in April, the deal should be over in a couple of weeks .

    Bellamkonda bags `Shivaji`!

Bellamkonda bags `Sivaji`! It’s official! Producer Bellamkonda Suresh has bagged the rights of Sivaji, the magnum opus in Tamil. The film has Tamil superstar Rajnikant and Shriya in the lead, directed by Shankar.

He will now be screening the Telugu version in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. AVM who is producing the film has officially made a statement on Wednesday (Feb 28) that the Telugu rights have been given to Bellamkonda Suresh.

Earlier, producer N V Prasad claimed that he holds the `Sivaji` Telugu rights and there was controversy and confusion over it. But with AVM issuing newspaper advertisements, Bellamkonda Suresh is all set to start its publicity in Telugu.

The buzz is that Bellamkonda Suresh snapped the theatrical rights of `Sivaji` for a whopping Rs 14 Crores! Dasari Narayan Rao's `Siri Media`, and other bigwigs were in fray for its rights but Bellamkonda beat others in the competition with his huge offer.

It is a record price for any dubbed film in Telugu! Remember that Bellamkonda only holds theatrical rights. AVM still holds the audio and satellite rights of Telugu version too.

`Sivaji` has finished its entire shooting and would release in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously on April 14, 2007. A.R Rahman scores the music and K.V.Anand is the cameraman.
